EDITING SERVICES FOR AUTHORS & PUBLISHERS
Proofreading
This is when your work is in its final stages, getting ready for its push from the nest with hopes of soaring. In proofing, I check for any outstanding errors in the text (typos, spelling, inaccuracies, formatting, and inconsistencies).
Line Editing
If proofreading is a look at the overall document, line editing is reducing the document down to a line by line project. Do you use the words “as” or “before” too much? Are your characters nodding so frequently, they’re about to bobble right off the page? Can your language use a little bit of finessing? Is your dialogue stilted? My goal is to make sure the story you’re telling is the story your readers will be devouring.
Developmental Editing
Developmental editors are sometimes referred to as “book doctors.” While I don’t slip into a white coat (unless it’s Comic-Con and Curt Connors cosplay is up for grabs), the edits here are more substantive. A developmental edit looks at POV, storytelling, thematic elements (light vs. dark | traditional vs. progressive), how well your story fits into its respective genre, whether your characters are dynamic or flat, and whether it’s ready for readers in your niche to enjoy rather than labor through. Unlike traditional dev-editing, I do make comments and suggest revisions to your story.
